more than panettone Lucky to be spending the afternoon in La Scuola at Eataly learning to make Italian desserts from food historian and cookbook author Francine Segan. I’m in love with the cover of her latest cookbook, Dolci: Italy’s Sweets, and would be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about what’s inside…
The Cutest Crab On Toast
I stopped in @ABCKitchen on Sunday when I realized it’d be foolish to join Batali’s Eataly line on an empty stomach. Luckily, imminent hunger-induced frowns were just averted with an order of ABC Kitchen’s peekytoe crab on toast followed by an entree of veal meatballs and pasta. But since the portions are small and I have an appetite, I had the salted caramel ice cream sundae too.
I cleaned my plates of a three-course lunch, but considering the bites were baby sized, I eventually found myself back on the Eataly line. Lunch wasn’t a bust by any means; you just can’t expect to feel stuffed by something called peekytoe.

“When one door closes, another opens” so the saying goes. When Jason and I found that the line into Eataly, Mario Batali’s new Italian food emporium, wrapped around the block, we consulted our mental map of Flatiron District restaurants - I powered up my Foodspotting app - and found an ice cream sundae topped with candied peanuts and popcorn in a bowl lined with chocolate sauce not too far away at that other hard-to-get-into place, ABC Kitchen. We got seated right away. It was Sunday before Labor Day.
