Celebrating my friend and photographer Donny Tsang tonight at the opening of his exhibit in the James Board House. His show is called Foodaissance to celebrate Brooklyn artisans, like Allison Robicelli of Robicelli’s Cupcakes, the lady wearing black in this pic, and captures those behind-the-burner moments in the kitchen. The photos will be on display until the end of October.
More Than Meets The Eye
I wish the food here was better executed because then I’d come more often. (The lasagna is too salty, for example.) They have huge windows that fill the space with natural light, making even my nearly finished cappuccino look picture perfect.

Jason’s friends are visiting from Canada and it’s their first time in New York. They want to see the Statue of Liberty, but we took them to Chelsea Market for hot dogs at Dickson’s Farmstand Meats instead.
(Note: Dickson’s only serves hot dogs on the weekend. During the week they have all sorts of incredible hot sandwiches. Get the Son Cubano if you’re lucky enough to stumble in on the right day.)

My friend Jacquie made this kick-ass peanut butter honeycomb pie from a Bon Appetit recipe for our barbecue today. She also made salted caramel ice cream.
My contribution? Arnold Palmer, which is a simple and summery beverage combining equal parts lemonade and iced tea. Unfortunately (but perhaps not surprisingly) I didn’t manage to provide both ingredients. Turns out that Whole Foods doesn’t sell large bottles of unsweetened iced tea so all I brought was… lemonade.
P.S. To fromthelibraryofjennyorleans who asked for the salted caramel ice cream recipe: I’m sure you can easily find one online, but I’ll ask Jacquie when I see her next!
Found my favorite coffee, Stumptown Hair Bender, at Balthazar. They even grind the beans for you so that you can make it in your much-neglected French press this week!

I have this weird thing against reblogging content because it’s not mine, but occasionally I break my own rule to share information that is too good to not spread far and wide: Milkmade Ice Cream has a tumblr blog!
Why is this important? Because MilkMade founder Diana Hardeman makes the most delicious horchata ice cream I have ever had. Okay, I have only had horchata-flavored dessert twice, but her ice cream puts David Chang’s horchata soft serve to shame. I’ve also tried MilkMade’s lavender-flavored ice cream, which is a masterpiece if you love lavender and cream. Her product is on the expensive, high quality side, but it’s one of those things that are well worth the price.

In all honesty, the name came first. We’ve been wanting to do something with candied bacon for a while. We’ve also been experimenting with herbs of late. Rosemary’s Baby came to mind when we perfected our Rosemary flavor - but what to mix in? Ahh, yes, candied bacon. And Rosemary’s Bac-y was born. As a vegetarian, I haven’t tasted it, but the tasters say it is solid.
A Dance For Japan in NYC
If you’re in New York this Saturday, please join my friend Kat Popiel and her friends at the Dance For Japan. All money raised will go to the Japan Society for earthquake and tsunami relief. There will be tons of food raffle prizes! The Filipino pop-up brunch spot Maharlika is giving away a brunch; you can win a four-course dinner with pairings for two from Le Comptoir; Emack & Bolio’s is giving away $100 of ice cream; and more.
It was a spectacular day in New York yesterday. After grabbing lunch with my cousin in Bryant Park, I made my way uptown in pursuit of Mister Softee. I never found him, but remembered that Grom, the pricey-but-worth-every-penny Italian gelateria, was opening its third New York location at Columbus Circle and was giving away free gelato all day to celebrate.
And because no route is ever straight, especially when I’m walking it, I decided to call my friend Allison to join me on my gelato pursuit. She couldn’t leave her desk for long, however, so she invited me up to her office instead to look at the view.
I made my way up to the 46th floor of her office building on 57th Street. I couldn’t help but hear Alicia Keys’ voice while looking at that picture perfect view…
