Plotting world domination with Kat and Alison over Dutch pancakes. The skylight in the back room means there’s beautiful natural light here, but the blueberry lemon pancakes could have used more lemon juice. And butter.

early morning in austin with chris connolly
I spent a lot of time with my BFF and Foodspotting designer Chris Connolly at SXSW this last week, dragging him to places like the Whole Foods flagship and taking pictures in and around Austin.
I took the top photo while waiting for our food at South Congress Cafe; he ordered migas and I got chipotle shrimp quesadilla and cheddar broccoli soup. We were sleepy from waking up at 7:30am (three hours after getting in after a late night) to drive to Hamilton Pool, 45 minutes outside Austin, hoping to photograph it during “golden hour” before daylight got too harsh and bright. Sadly, the pool was closed due to hazardous rain conditions, but he did get an awesome shot of me in the middle of the road. (And we returned the next day to find the pool open, where he took this photo.)
Chris is a great designer, photographer and a good friend who I got to know while traveling together in Ireland last November. Don’t miss him on Instagram and follow him on Tumblr.

Spending Saturday morning with some of the most food- and social media-savvy women I know in New York. Karen made plum crostata from a New York Times recipe, Brianna baked a mushroom quiche, Kristin made lemon olive oil gelato and maple vanilla ice cream, just to name a few yummy things everyone made for our potluck brunch. I brought cava and grapefruit juice to make sort-of lilosas (champagne and grapefruit juice) because it’s bubbly, fruity and a little more interesting than mimosas. Most importantly, it doesn’t require any cooking at all.
Update: I’m not convinced a champagne and grapefruit juice cocktail is called a lilosa, but that’s what Jason found on the Internet.
Spent the morning in hot pursuit of brunch from a certain perpetually packed Lower East Side eatery. The hour wait passed quickly enough though, with Jason catching up on his TV shows on his Netflix app and me reading last week’s New York Magazine in which featured a timely piece on New York’s best new outdoor dining spaces by my friend Jenny Miller.
The vanilla buttermilk waffle with macadamia nuts, black berry sauce and berries from Clinton Street Baking Company was more than worth the wait. I should point out, however, that standing around in the shade on a warm day sure beats feeling my extremities freeze over on a blistering cold winter morning, which I’ve been known to do before in the name of pancakes. Happy Memorial Day!

Custard French Toast, Egg Celent or Egg Cessive?
Whoever thought to smother thick slices of bread with egg had the right idea. Whoever thought to smother it with custard, however, was an overachiever! This was the third entree that Fiona and I shared at Nopa when I was in San Francisco last week. First dish involved polenta and eggs; second was a medium rare burger that veered closer to a bloody rare; and third was this dessert crowned with cinnamon brown butter. Considering its intimidating size, we only managed to finish off one of the two. Afterward, we learned that you can opt to just get one, but maybe what we needed was a third dining companion and not less food.

A Loaf of French Toast aka When A Slice Is Not Enough
{ please recommend amyblogschow in the Food directory today ♥ }
Last week, a friend who represents the Gansevoort Hotel invited me to check out the menu at the hotel’s new eatery, Carte Blanche. Though I often doubt the palatability of hotel fare, I was suckered in by their brunch menu, which is available every day between 11am-4pm. Imagine - French toast on a Wednesday! And that, my friends, is exactly what I got. Carte Blanche’s signature Cubed French Toast is a square-shaped goliath dipped in vanilla and orange custard that’s stuffed with mascarpone cheese. The soft brioche is flash-fried before being finished off with berries and cream.
The mountainous loaf was enough for me, though I did long briefly for the burger that oozed with cheese. I have to admit, my friend’s skinny fries were well-seasoned and excellent too. And since it’s hard to avoid an indulgent meal while you’re here, I recommend dipping the fries in the chipotle sauce that accompanies the burger. You will thank me. Fatties.

New Yorkers On A Saturday Afternoon
Please recommend amyblogschow in the Tumblr Food directory today ♥ and thanks to everyone who voted in the weeks before! This is a photo I snuck of the Prune brunch crowd after photographing my Dutch-style blueberry pancake on Saturday. Oh, New Yorkers.
Prune’s Red, White, and Blue Pancake
I’m not sure if Prune meant to offer a blueberry pancake with sour cream to coincide with the July 4th weekend, but the color scheme is certainly fitting. The mega thick Dutch style pancake I ordered was nearly cake-like, having been baked in an oven rather than cooked on a stove. It was a beautiful frisbee-shaped cake frosted with sour cream blueberry swirls.

On Sunday, I dragged Jason to a Melissa shoes sample sale in Chelsea and randomly wandered by a bricked-in back garden on the corner of west 24th street and 10th avenue. The wine bar-restaurant was called Trestle on Tenth and I put our name down for the 20-minute brunch waiting list. An hour (but two new pairs of Melissas) later, we sat down in the back patio for brunch of sausage and eggs. I really wanted the banana-stuffed French toast, but by 2PM they had run out. I opted for these soft, flaky sticky buns instead, which were buttery like brioche with cinnamon sugar swirls. Will return in the coming summer weekends to try their banana-stuffed French toast in my new rubber shoes.
I keep ordering the biscuit and grits combo at Comfort Diner. Not because it’s incredible, but cause it’s good enough. Still, it’s nowhere near the caliber of what’s pictured above.
Comfort Diner can sate any rainy day craving with grilled cheese, ricotta blueberry pancakes, and cheap coffee. It’s got all the fixings of an old-school greasy spoon plus an inexplicably heavy door that will budge for nothing less than a full body slam.
But this post is not about what I ate this morning; this post is about what I wish I ate this morning, i.e. the barbecue pulled pork and cheddar grits from Brooklyn’s Peaches, pictured above. I continue to order grits from the likes of Comfort Diner because I’m trying to relive the cheesy, hominy glory I enjoyed once in another borough.
I’m not hungry anymore, but it’s not the same.
It’s Monday night and I’m thrilled to share this photo of my blackberry pancakes from Spitzer’s Corner. I was in hot pursuit of Sugar Sweet Sunshine cupcakes in the Lower East Side last Saturday when I crossed paths with Spitzer’s blackboard, which announced BRUNCH! They serve it until 5PM. I was particularly pleased to stumble across Spitzer’s because my last visit had resulted with their extremely excellent Kobe beef burger in my stomach. Weird thing is…at the time they wouldn’t put cheese on the burger as “it would compromise the integrity of the beef”. So I asked for cheese on the side - a request they were happy to comply with. But I guess, eventually, they realized they were being ridiculous. Now you can have your burger and the cheese too.
