I had forgotten that the New Amsterdam Market is now open every Sunday. But since the summer, row after row of vendors touting artisanal hot dogs, cheeses, lobster rolls, homemade soda, local vegetables and cured meats would set up shop every week in a drafty lot at South Street Seaport.
I was reminded to stop by New Amsterdam today because Jason and I have been craving Pie Corps, a pie maker we met at Brooklyn Local, the City Harvest benefit event, a few weeks back. Pie Corps blew us away with their buttery crusts and deep-fried apple pie drizzled with caramel sauce and sea salt. We also bought a pulled pork pie, which came with a whole egg baked inside, for dinner. Needless to say, I’ve been in Pie Corps withdrawal since.

After recently discovering that I had zero photos of fresh produce and fruit, I’ve been on a mission to capture everything I see that’s just-picked or still alive on the vine. I came across these gorgeous organic blackcurrants at the New Amsterdam Market by South Street Seaport last weekend. Maybe it’s the contrast between the blue-black of the berries with the robin’s egg blue of the boxes, but I thought the fruit looked less like food and more like art.
